1786 Effingham County Land Record for Richard Bennett

Richard Bennett, born circa 1756 in North Carolina, moved to Effingham County, Georgia, before July 1782, accompanied by alleged brothers James and William. He married Mary Cook in 1785. The couple is believed to be buried in Jesup, Georgia. They had several children, including William, Elizabeth, Henry, Wiley, and Braxton. Bennett later relocated to Appling County, where he died before 1830.

1782 Georgia Amercement Bill – Effingham County

Green Braggs Tavern, Union Street

During the American Revolutionary War era, an “amercement bill” documented fines against individuals in Effingham County, Georgia, typically for political disobedience or loyalist sympathies. This act amerced certain people who had been amenable to British control in Georgia but who were not named in the 1782 confiscation and banishment act. The bill identifies two classes of offenders: one class would have their citizenship rights restored, while the other had to pay financial penalties before having their rights restored. This information is significant for genealogists, as it confirms an ancestor’s presence in Effingham County by July 1872 and probably indicates that they did not serve in the Revolutionary War.
