Effingham County, Georgia Veterans

The Effingham Hussars, organized in Springfield, Georgia around 1846, entered Confederate service in April 1861. Initially part of the Georgia Cavalry as Company A, they became known as Captain Bird’s Mounted Company in December 1861. This company, predominantly consisting of men from Effingham County, was crucial in patrolling and defending the Georgia Coast against Union forces. The Hussars were later incorporated into the 5th Georgia Cavalry in January 1863. Key officers included Captain Edward Bird and Captain Henry J. Strobhar. Many members served from 1861 until the war’s end in 1865, with significant contributions during their tenure.
