Richard Bennett, 1756-c1830, Appling County
Richard Bennett, born circa 1756 in North Carolina, moved to Effingham County, Georgia, before July 1782, accompanied by alleged brothers James and William. He married Mary Cook in 1785. The couple is believed to be buried in Jesup, Georgia. They had several children, including William, Elizabeth, Henry, Wiley, and Braxton. Despite claims of Bennett’s participation in the war, genealogical evidence suggests he was amerced for allegiance to the British instead. Bennett later relocated to Appling County, where he died before 1830.
