About 5 miles East on this Road is the site of Old Ebenezer, the first settlement of the Salzburgers in Georgia. They selected this location and named it Ebenezer — the stone of help. General Oglethorpe marked out their town, and soon they erected homes and some public buildings. The settlers remained at this site two years, despite many hardships, including the difficulty in navigation of the stream upon which their town was situated. Effingham – a county in the east part of Georgia, has an area of 480 square miles. It is situated between the Savannah and Ogeechee rivers, which respectively form its boundaries on the east and west; the former separates it from South Carolina. The county is also drained by Ebenezer creek. The surface is level, and partly covered with forests of pine and cypress; the soil is sandy, and, with small exceptions, unproductive.
