Altha M. James Obituary

Altha M. James, died about 2:00 o’clock Monday morning, December 23, 1929, while the outside world was wrapped in a heavy mantle of snow and the mercury was standing a few degrees above zero. The spirit of Miss Altha James left its earthly abode in the home of her brother, W. B. James and went back to God who gave it. For the last four months she had been in very poor health from cancer of the mouth, which affected her throat, stomach and other organs of the body. At the first appearance of cancer, the family physicians advised taking her to some specialists in Atlanta for this trouble. This was done, but they said they could give only temporary relief. After treatment in the hospital she improved for about three weeks, then began to decline and lost gradually to the end. She leaves four brothers and one sister: B. R. James of Chattanooga, TN., H. R. James of Eton, GA., and Miss Minda James, W. B. James and J. H. James of Gilmer County. She had been a member of Nine Mile Methodist Church since girlhood and her body was laid to rest in the Nine Mile Cemetery on Christmas eve day, after a beautiful funeral service conducted by her pastor, Rev. W. B. Hughes. The members of her family wish to thank the good people who so cheerfully gave assistance during the sickness, death and burial of one dear to them. Especially do they want to thank those good people at Nine Mile for their heroic service in such frozen snowy weather.
