Frank Payne, 71, of Jefferson County, Dandridge, TN, formerly of Gilmer County, GA, died July 14, 2003, in Jefferson City, TN. He was born October 5, 1931, in Pickens County, GA, the son of Joseph B. and Mattie Gaddis Payne. He is survived by his wife, Mickie Payne; son, Michael Payne; grandchildren; great-grandchild; sisters, Marjorie Wetzel and Ruth Jones. Georgia Pettit Martin Ray, 79, died October 6, 1949. She was born October 12, 1870 and was the youngest child of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Pettit. Mr. Alec Pettit of Sapulpa, OK, is the only surviving member of her father’s family. She was a faithful member of Cartecay Church. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband, Bascomb Martin and her second husband, D. C. Ray. She is survived by children, Oral and Oden Martin. Jack Ellington, 29, died March 27, 1941 at Camp Stewart near Savannah in Chatham County, GA. The son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Horace M. Ellington, Jack was born and reared in Gilmer County, Ellijay, GA. On February 22, 1941, he enlisted in the anti-aircraft division of the coast artillery and was sent to Camp Stewart near Savannah. He was stricken ill shortly after he enlisted and was carried to the station hospital at Camp Stewart, where he passed away March 27, 1941. Jack was a member of the Ellijay Baptist Church. James Simpson Tankersley, 90, widely-known Georgia physician and Gilmer County, GA civic leader, died in Cherokee County, Canton, GA on February 11, 1950. Dr. Tankersley began his medical practice here in 1884 and had been a physician for the L. & N. Railroad for more than 50 years. A native of Gilmer County, GA, he was educated in local schools and the old Atlanta Medical College which is now a part of Emory University. He was one of the oldest graduates of Emory. John S. Hudson, 88, died September 28, 1949. Mr. Hudson was a member of the Cartecay Methodist Church and the Ellijay Masonic Lodge. He was preceded in death by his father J. A. Hudson, who was killed at the age of 28 at the Battle of Resaca in 1864; his mother; his wife, Harriett Elizabeth Tabor Hudson. Surviving are children, E. T., Winnifred and R. G. Laura BISHOP, 80, died December 24, 1954 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Joe Crowe in Cartersville, GA. A native of Gilmer County, Ellijay, GA, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Levi Greer who were among the early settlers of Gilmer and long prominent in Ellijay. Mary Elizabeth Bell Simmons, 88, died May 17, 1948 in Gilmer County, GA. Born September 18, 1859 in Madison County, TN she moved with her family to Jonesboro, AR where she met and married the late Mr. L. M. Simmons who brought her to the Cartecay community where they lived until his death in 1923. Since then she has made her home in Ellijay. She was a member of Cartecay Methodist Church. Mary Foster Milton, 74, died March 1, 1950 in Gilmer County, East Ellijay, GA. A native of this county, she was born March 3, 1875, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. H. “Bud” Foster, and was reared in Ellijay. Mrs. Milton was a member of Watkins Memorial Methodist Church. Besides her husband, Robert L. Milton, she is survived by one daughter, Miss Marie Milton; three sons, Paul, Foster and Herbert Milton. Funeral services were held March 3, 1950 at the Watkins Memorial Methodist Church. Mattie W. Jarrett Kelly, 82, died January 27, 1954 in Atlanta, GA. Mrs. Kelly is survived by her husband, C. B. Kelly. Funeral services were held January 29, 1954 at the Ellijay First Baptist Church. Maude Davis Pinson, died December 29, 1929 after only a few hours illness causing a great shock and a feeling of sincere regret among a wide circle of friends through the county. Mrs. Pinson who apparently was enjoying her usual health was taken suddenly ill Sunday morning with what was first thought to be a stroke of paralysis. Doctors were immediately summoned and all that medical aid and loving hands could do was done to relieve her suffering.
