Timothy Alderman, a well-known citizen of Brooks County in his time, was born 19 Feb 1801 in Duplin County, North Carolina, a son of David and Jemima Alderman. He had a twin brother, James, who married Roxana Holloway and, after residing for a few years in Thomas County, Georgia, moved to Florida, where he became one of the first settlers of Hillsborough County. Together, they had 11 children:
- James Alderman, born 8 Apr 1824, married 14 Apr 1844, Jane Roberts, daughter of Elias. Died 17 Aug 1887.
- Nancy Alderman, born 27 Nov 1826, married 20 Dec 1844, William Vick of Colquitt County. Died 25 Dec 1913.

- Henry Alderman, born 2 Jun 1842, married Martha Mobley, daughter of George G. Died 7 Apr 1905.
- Timothy Alderman, born 13 Jun 1845, married Mary E. Rosser, daughter of H. J. E. Died 23 Dec 1902.
- Sarah Jane Alderman, born 1 May 1848, married 8 Jan 1873, J. F. Allen.
Timothy Alderman moved to Bulloch County, Georgia, with his father in 1816. He married Sarah Williams there on 22 Sep 1822. She was the daughter of James and Elizabeth (Holloway) Williams. James Williams was a Revolutionary War soldier from North Carolina. Sarah was born in Bulloch County on 2 Feb 1807 and passed away at her home in Brooks County on 16 Jun 1899.
Around 1832, Timothy and Sarah Alderman moved to Lowndes County, Georgia, settling first in what is now Cook County, near her brothers, Sampson G. and Ezekiel J. Williams, along with other family members. In 1835, he decided to relocate within Lowndes County to the Tallokas district, now part of Brooks County. There, he cleared land and established a farm, which he later sold before moving about two miles south of what is now Quitman. Dissatisfied with this location, he sold the property and returned to the Tallokas district, purchasing another farm. Over time, he expanded his holdings, accumulating several hundred head of cattle and building a successful career in stock raising and general farming.
When Brooks County was formed in 1858, Alderman’s property became part of the new county. He served on the first Grand Jury in Brooks County, May term, 1859. He served as Tax Collector from 1866 to 1868 and again from 1871 to 1873. He also held the office of Receiver of Tax Returns from 1877 to 1879.
Timothy Alderman owned slaves during both the 1850 and 1860 census. He was recorded with 8 slaves in 1850 and 9 slaves in 1860.
Some genealogists have attributed the Civil War records of Timothy, Jr. to Timothy, Sr. I see no evidence on the grave or records indicating Timothy served. He would have been in his 60s at the time of the Civil War.
Timothy Alderman passed away on 28 Feb 1881. He and his wife are buried at Bethel Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. In his later years, he joined Bethel Church and was baptized. [1]There is some dispute on whether Timothy joined the Bethel Church or just attended. “Timothy never united with any church but he was a faithful attendant at Bethel Baptist Church along with his … Continue reading Sarah Alderman became a member of Bethel by letter in Jan 1839 and was dismissed by letter in Sep 1854.

An obituary said of him: ‘His seat in Bethel is vacant, truly a good man has gone from us. He contributed largely to the support of the church and to the poor.
