According
to Wilkinson County Georgia Historical Collections, by Joseph Maddox,
Anson Ball, whose wife was Phoebe Jenkins, came to Wilkinson from Washington
county with his father John Ball, a Revolutionary veteran, shortly after
1806. Anson, a wealthy planter, bought several hundred acres of land in
what is now Bethel Militia District. For convenience of his family, the
Todds, Methvins, Burneys and others who lived nearby, he gave the land
to erect a church denomination unknown. The church was eventually dissolved
for the whites and give over to blacks. However the nearby cemetery has
been used for burial of descendants of former members. See Holliman-Hatfield
