Asbury Methodist Church
Hwy 18 S. near Twiggs County
line. Organized prior to 1850.
According to Victor Davidson, in History of Wilkinson County the
church was named in honor of Bishop Asbury the church was organized by
Rev. Charles G. Johnson prior to 1850. Fletcher Reed and his wife Mrs.
Frances Reed, built an arbor and Charles G. Johnson, aided by William Griffin,
conducted the first meetings under this arbor.
The building was erected
in 1851 on land donated by Hardy Durham, the deed being made to C. G. Johnson,
William M. Dennard, William Griffin, Kelly Glover and A.H. Moore Trustees.
The building is on the old homeplace of Dr. Fletcher Reed.
Early pastors were Rev.
Charles G. Johnson, William Griffin, C.B.G Johnson (son of Rev. C.
G. Johnson and Margaret Vinson Johnson). Early stewards were Oliver Johnson,
Marshall Dennard and William Veal. A sunday school was maintained here
soon after the church was built.
Rev. Charles Green Johnson, who is buried
in the church cemetery
also organized Swift Creek and Prospect
Churches in Twiggs County.
