57th Regiment, Georgia Infantry,
Company K, "Oconee Greys"
57th Infantry Regiment [also called 54th Regiment] was organized during the spring of 1862. Many of its members were recruited in Troup, Peach, Montgomery, and Oconee counties. This unit served in East Tennessee and Kentucky, then moved to Mississippi where it was assigned to T.H. Taylor's Brigade in the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. It fought at Champion's Hill and was captured in July, 1863, at Vicksburg. Exchanged and placed in General Mercer's and J.A. Smith's Brigade, the 57th was active in many conflicts from Resaca to Bentonville. During the Atlanta Campaign, from July 20 to September 1, it reported 54 casualties and in December, 1864, totalled 120 effectives. Only a remnant surrendered on April 26, 1865. Colonel William Barkuloo, Lieutenant Colonel Cincinnatus S. Guyton, and Major John W. Shinholser were in command. (Civil War Sailors and Soldiers System)
"In October
1861 two other companies were organized in Wilkinson County, one commanded
by Captain R.L. Story and the other by Captain H. K. Byington. These companies
were armed with shotguns and other arms as could be borrowed from the citizens
of the county. Both companies were sent first to Camp Harrison and then
near Savannah for training. Here the men were armed with rifles. These
companies having enlisted for only six months, their term of enlistment
expiring in April 1862, the companies re-enlisted in toto, but their being
an insufficient number of companies in their old regiment, and lacking
only one to complete it, it was decided that twenty-five men from each
of these companies together with detachments from Laurens County should
form another company. This was known as Company I, with Captain Bishop
commanding. The original companies were designated as Companies D and K,
all three companies being incorporated in the 57th Georgia Regiment."

CAMP
LIBERTY, Wilkinson County, Ga., July the 21st, 1861
At a meeting held by the Oconee Grays
to-day, Capt. J. W. Shinholser in the chair, the following resolutions
were unanimously adopted.
Resolved, That we the members of
the Oconee Grays, before striking our tents, to retrn to our homes make
a public acknowledgement to our friends, for the kindness and liberality
they have manifested to us during our weeks encampment. And while we return
our gratitude and thanks to the people of this community at lage, we would
not forget to mention more particularly, the names of our friends James
Stevens, James Jackson, S. J. Stubbs and R. N. Parker, who contributed
so largely to our wants and comfort; and we hope their garners may be as
bountifully supplied as those who seemed to feel the times too hard to
contribute at all, - but we hope they fell none the less interested in
our country's cause, and common struggle for liberty.
And we beg leave to return our warmest
thanks to Prof. Lane of the Oglethorpe University, who cheered
us in our camps on Thursday with one of his able sermons from the test-
"And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying: and what shall we do."
And we feel truly grateful to hime for the presentation of twenty-six testaments
which he put in charge of our Captain, requesting him to put two
in each camp chest when the company shall be called into service.
We aslo beg leave to return our warmest
thanks to Mr. E. Cumming, of Irwinton, Rev. Mr. Parrot, the
representative of the Bundridge Rifles, Leiut. H. K. Byington, the
representative of the Oconee Grays, Maj. W. Napier, of Baldwin,
and J. T. Huges, of Wilkinson, for the able and patriotic speeches
made by them to the soldiers and citizens in attendance on Thursday.
And in conclusion, we would
like to thank all of our friends who took so deep an interest in our enjoyment
on Thursday. And when we are call into service, as we ram the cartridge
and draw the sword upon the field of battle, the remembrances of these
friends will give us firm hearts and strong arm to meet successfully the
foe. OCONEE GRAYS.
