Organized a short time after Company F by
N. A Carswell. Part of the time while it was being organized the company
was encamped at New Providence Church where the men were drilled.
Companies F & I were soon rushed to Virginia.
"Being the first Georgia regiment
organized in Virginia soil, before even the reception of that State subsequently,
it was honored by a special order of thanks from the Secretary of War,
for re-enlisting for the war before their first enlisted term of service
had expired. For a like reason President Davis and General Lee, on the
front lines around Richmond, raised their hats to this regiment, the President
saying: "Third Georgians, I salute you! For myself and the people of the
Confederate States I thank you."

3rd Infantry Regiment was assembled at Augusta, Georgia, in April, 1861. Its companies were recruited in the counties of Clarke, Burke, Dawson, Dade, Madison, Baldwin, and Oconee. This regiment served in the Departments of Norfolk, North Carolina, and Middle and Eastern Florida before being assigned to the Army of Northern Virginia. Here it was under the command of General A.R. Wright and after November, 1864, General Sorrell. It participated in the difficult campaigns of the army from Seven Pines to Cold Harbor, then was involved in the Petersburg siege north and south of the James River and various conflicts around Appomattox. The unit reported 25 killed, 110 wounded, and 22 missing at Malvern Hill and had 10 killed and 129 wounded at Chancellorsville. It lost more than forty-five percent of the 441 engaged at Gettysburg, and there were 75 casualties at Manassas Gap. The 3rd surrendered in April, 1865, with 12 officers and 236 men. Its commanders were Colonels Edward J. Walker and Ambrose R. Wright; Lieutenant Colonels A.B. Montgomery, R.B. Nisbet, James S. Reid, and Claiborne Snead; and Majors George E. Hayes, John F. Jones, Augustus H. Lee, and John R. Sturges. Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System

Augusta Chronicle and Sentinel
the Irwinton (Ga.) Southern relates
the following parallel experience: "In the battle of Hatcher's Run, in
1864, Green Pittman, of Wilkinson county, received a wound in the
face, the ball entering the upper portion of the nose on the left side.
The wound was probed and dressed by an army surgeon, and finally healed
up, and although the surgeon stated that the ball was still in the head,
Mr. Pittman had almost forgotten it, never having experienced the least
pain or inconvenience from it. In 1869, one Sunday morning in February,
five years after receiving the wound, as Mr. Pittman was making his toilet
to attend church, it fell out of his mouth. Mr. Pittman was combing his
hair at the time, standing perfectly erect, and came near swallowing the
ball after it fell into his mouth. Strange to say, no hemorrhage followed
its exit nor was there any pain felt. The ball weight one ounce and two
pennyweights. It is now in possession of Mr. Pittman, who was a gallant
member of the Third Georgia Regiment during the war."
