William R. "Uncle
Billy" Whitaker late 1890's
son of Nathaniel Pace and Nancy Stokes Whitaker
"He, among others, had moved from
Wilkinson County to Bullock County (Statesboro)
to grow long staple cotton. Being
a surviving member of the 3rd Ga. Inf and
being present at the surrender at Appomattox
he was a local hero even down
there and seemed to be honored on every
Confederate veterans day
-- evidenced by the number of metals he
is wearing." John Merwyn Whitaker
